Sapphire history & meaning
Brooke loves working with sapphire in her one of a kind jewelry.
The name Sapphire derives from Greek 'sappheiros' meaning blue, yet sapphires come in a wide array of colors including pink, yellow, orange and green.
Ancient Persians believed the earth was a giant sapphire that made the sky blue. In ancient Greece, sapphire was associated with the god Zeus and the ability to see into the future. Sapphires have long thought to have healing powers and been associated with royality, nobility and the clergy throughout history.
Sapphire is the gemstone for September birthdays. It is also the gemstone for 5th and 25th wedding anniversaries. Sapphires are said to represent truth, loyalty, harmony and protection.
About Sapphire
Sapphires are the second hardest gemstone on earth after diamond.
Sapphire is a gem quality variety of the mineral corundum - aluminium oxide which crystallised into gemstones with the presence of small amounts of other elements, especially iron and chrome that are responsible for the color. A ruby-red sapphire colored by chrome is actually a Ruby.
Classical violet-blue sapphires traditionally came from the Kashmir region of India between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Australia was a significant source of sapphires until deposits were discovered in Madagascar during the 1990s where it leads the world in sapphire gemstone production. Sapphires are also fround in Sri Lanka and even Montana in areas around the Missouri River and Rock Creek.
